Irish Food and Culture

Apr 5, 2021 | Food & Drink, Reviews

With St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, and the close ties between Matsue and Ireland, I was on the lookout for something special, something uniquely Irish. As fortune would have it, I was pleased to meet Alan Fisher who recently relocated to Matsue who will have opened the new location of his restaurant Kyojin Stewhouse on March 6th; featuring authentic Irish stews, meats and imported Irish beer by Whitewater Brewing Co.

Alan comes to us from Dundalk, Ireland, which is a small town on the east coast of Ireland, equal distances from Dublin to it’s south, and Belfast to it’s north. In 2008, Alan moved to Japan, opening his first restaurant in Tokyo in February, 2015 with a passion to share the Irish culture, using food as a gateway and it truly shows in what he has created. Kyojin Stewhouse’s new location in Matsue offers an immersive experience, not only into Irish food and imports, but to the Gaelic language with Irish proverbs, phrases and even vocabulary lists surrounding you at every turn, Irish calligraphy, a gallery of Irish Nihonga paintings by artist Erika Abe and an artistic linoleum print tour of Dublin by Pippa O’Neill.

You will also learn of interesting Irish people whose images adorn the high walls, as well as faerie tree fantasy imagery throughout the restaurant, complete with a lovely little faerie door which invites you to enter the realm of the faerie Foye Market. Weather permitting, you can pass by the faerie door,
out onto the terrace overlooking Ohashigawa River, where you can enjoy Irish barbecue and a fantastic view of Matsue especially captivating when the waters ripple, reflecting the beautiful sunsets.

Not one to rest on his achivements, Alan has also relocated his Kyojin Imports and Kyojin Store to Shimane as well. This is good news for those who simply can’t make the trip to Matsue and would like to experience a bit of Irish culture from the comfort of their own home. You can order stews and meats directly on their website, delivered frozen and prepared at home anytime. To complete the home experience, I recommend not only ordering food, but picking up Alan’s fantasy novel, “A Giant’s Dream” the first of The Fay Folk Series published by Koyjin Books, available directly on the Kyojin Store website.

Whether you’re just looking for good healthy food, or the whole Irish experience, make March a special one by visiting Alan Fisher and at Kyojin Stewhouse. You’re sure to see me there from time-to-time, so stop by and introduce yourself. I’ll be the American surrounded by a rack of Irish sausage, bowls of Dublin Coddle, Irish Lamb and Beef Guinness stews quietly contemplating how to fit through faerie door number 136.
