THE BEAUTY OF SPRING IN SHIMANE

Apr 5, 2021 | Places

The Spring in Japan is when new things start. Many people start their new jobs, students move into their new classes, and the Cherry Blossoms are in full bloom. I think this is one of the most beautiful times in Japan. The beauty of Cherry Blossoms surrounding Matsue Castle, Izumo Shrine, and many places throughout Shimane are a great pleasure to enjoy. I would like to recommend two places that are thought, by many, as a must place to go.

The first place is located in Unnan City, Kisuki cho, along the Hii River bank. The beauty of the 800 trees and two kilometers of a Cherry Blossom tunnel makes this a difficult place to match. The evening is just as nice with electric lights and paper lanterns placed along the trail makes for a fantastic night view. Not to be outdone the Akagawa River banks, Daito cho, are also a place of beauty located between the Yanagibashi and Kamobashi bridges. If you walk near the cultural hall of “LaMer” you will not be disappointed by the wonderful display of Cherry Blossoms. Finally, if all the pink is too much or you were late to visit than along highway #54 and the Mitoya river is another area of trees. These are green blossoms named, “Gyoikou.” They are a little later bloom, mid to late April. While not in pink color, they are also just as wonderful and a great second viewing of Cherry Blossoms.

The second area is at the very western end of Shimane, next to Yamaguchi, is a small town named Tsuwano. Most people living in the Izumo and Matsue area, including locals, do not know very much about this area. There are many different interesting places and events at Tsuwano that warrant a visit and there is not a better time than during the Cherry Blossoms. There are a few different locations around the town that are a must see. First, close to Tonomachi Street, where the lords of the area once lived and now home to the town office, along the Tsuwano River. Another place is close to the Washibara Hachimangu Shrine where the Yabusame (horseback archery) ceremony is held. And finally, on the other side of town near the Otome Toge Maria Seido (a historic Chapel). All three places are a great visit during your trip and the Cherry Blossoms are a very special time.

No matter where you visit to watch the Cherry Blossoms, have a great time and enjoy the outdoors of Shimane.
